A typical attack lasts between four hours and three days

A secondary headache can also be the result of a buildup of fluid and inflammatory substances in the sinus cavities. This disease – sinusitis – is common in winter, is caused by a number of typical bacteria, and presents with headaches in the sinus area, which are aggravated by percussion and sometimes by moving the head. A migraine is described as a pain that hits the head like a hammer. The level of pain is moderate to severe. A migraine usually occurs on one side of the head, and is aggravated during exercise and exposure to light (photophobia), noise or smells. Migraine is often also characterized by nausea and vomiting. Migraine attacks can occur over a long period of time and may strike daily or once every few weeks, months or even years.

Migraine is three times more common in women. More than shop half of people who suffer from migraines report having relatives who suffer from the same problem. Although migraines can strike at any age, they are most common between the ages of 10 and 40. In most people, migraines strike cyclically, and in menopausal women, migraines become less severe around the age of 50. Changes in sleep habits, irregular meals, and various food products such as chocolate, yellow cheese, red wine, caffeine, aspartame, monosodium glutamate (common in Chinese food), nitrites and nitrates (found mainly in sausages and hot dogs) can trigger migraines. Hormonal imbalances, birth control pills, and periods of pregnancy can also trigger migraines. A small number of migraine sufferers recognize a warning sign before the attack, called an “aura.” This is a transient neurological disorder that appears half an hour before the onset of pain. It is usually characterized by flashing or jagged lights, or blind spots in the field of vision, a phenomenon called scotoma.
