Earthquake in Indonesia, tsunami warning issued

International Desk: A strong 7.0 magnitude earthquake has struck the northern Indonesian island of Lombok, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. A tsunami warning has been issued following the quake.

The country's disaster mitigation agency said a tsunami warning had been issued as the quake's epicenter was just 15 kilometers below the surface. There were no initial reports of damage or casualties.

Just a week ago, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the same region, country email list killing at least 17 people and injuring more than 150.

Locals ran in panic after the earthquake on Sunday (August 5). The 7.0 magnitude earthquake was followed by two more aftershocks, each lasting about 60 seconds.

Authorities have issued a tsunami warning and ordered people to evacuate to safety. People in coastal areas in particular have been asked to take the matter seriously.

Indonesia's meteorological agency chief Dukarita Karnawati said people in coastal areas were urged to quickly evacuate to higher ground and remain calm and monitor the situation.

Lombok resident Mataram said the sudden strong tremors caused panic among the people, who rushed out of buildings and onto the streets.
